Do you love the idea of quilting and sewing but feel frustrated with how to find the time or how to go about setting up your space? I’ve got a great list of the bare essentials to get you started. It doesn’t have to cost an arm and leg.
We’ll also continue making this delightful little tree scene quilt we started in Video #1.
Remember: Not in the mood to make a chilly looking scene? You can modify it to look something like this:
If you’re a beginner you’ll find these tips and tricks so helpful as you learn to navigate the ins and outs of quilting and sewing. But guess what? I just learned several of these tips only recently, after years and years of sewing. My guess is that some of you have even more tips to teach me!
We’ll finish mounting our little quilt on painted stretched canvas so it’s ready to hang on the wall. You’ll have a great little winter scene or pop of color for your wall that you can change out with the seasons.
Enjoying the videos, thank you very much!
Are we curving our borders as a design element or is there another purpose?
Jennifer
Good question. I have two reasons for doing it. I think it softens the look of the quilt. It is a recurring design element in my window series. You can check it out at https://rachelderstinedesigns.com/product-category/window-series/
So glad you are enjoying the videos!

Loved this freeform style! I was hoping you would explain the mechanics of glueing to the prefab canvas; type of glue, how to get it on straight etc…I’m working on something right now and this information would be so helpful! Thanks Rachel!
I use Liquitex gel medium, brushed onto the canvas, almost to the edge. The quilt can be centered on the canvas and will be adjustable, briefly, before the gel dries.
Enjoying the videos! Great tips. Thank you so much for sharing.
I’m so glad you are enjoying them! You are so welcome!
Very informative video. Did you make your quilt hangars? I love them
Thanks! I get those bamboo textile hangers from Ten Thousand Villages. They have many stores across the country or you can order online.

Love the slight curve technique with the borders. Although I’ve backtracked, I can’t find the name of the sheer, sparkly fabric that goes on top of the trees. Please tell me again? Thanks!
Thanks Lynne! I have looked on Joann.com and it is out of stock so I would advise that you go to etsy.com and do a search for “sparkle sheer white fabric”. They have lots of similar options. Even sparkle tulle would work.
Thank you for this great video. I’ve already had a try to sew this little quilt. It was great fun. I love the idea to put this quilt on canvas.
So glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoyed the video lots of tips. Looking forward to how you glue this to canvas. I am wondering how do you finish the edge of canvas, do you paint it or is it in a frame? Do you place all your work on canvas? Now to look at your website gallery.
Thanks Bonnie! I paint the edges, part of the back and part of the front with black acrylic paint. Gel Medium is what I use to glue the quilt to the canvas. I know some people stitch their quilts to the canvas – I have not done that yet and mine are fine after several years. I only use canvas on my smaller works which would look rather lost if they were not framed or mounted to canvas. I have customers who frame all my work – even the larger pieces. It’s not my preference but it is their choice.
I love learning new techniques. Your relaxed, organic approach to cutting the ‘frames’ is so refreshing.
Thank you so much, Irene!
I’m inspired. Thanks for teaching videos!
So glad you are inspired and you are welcome!
Missed video #1
Is there somewhere i can get it ?
Yes, you may find it here: Video One
I really enjoyed these 2 videos. I’m a pre-beginner so knowing that I should even PUT borders around the pictures really helped. Your borders really make the print stand out. Is there a third video on quilting this project?
Check your email in the next day or two.
Thank you so much for the great tips! I’m glad people asked the names of products you used and how you finished the sides of the canvas. So many great ideas!
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
