This class is designed as an entry level workshop on the use of color. Students will be instructed on some of the basic rules of good quilt construction habits. The above square within a square quilt design will be introduced and taught as a useful tool for color play.
More experienced students may, however, use their skills such as improv piecing to create a different quilt but applying the same principles of color. If you wish to create a quilt with triangles or hexagons you may also do so, applying the use of color which we will discuss in class.
Perhaps you are a skilled quilter but color is always a challenge for you. This class will help you focus on the how and why of that challenge to move you toward more effective use of color.
We will be exploring basic principles of color using the color wheel and showing images of quilts which use those principles effectively. Use of values will be included in the discussion.
Each student will choose either a simple pattern offered for the class or a design of their own choosing which lends itself well to color experimentation. This may be a grid style or improvisational style design.
Students will be assigned the task of using what they have learned to create a basic color scheme for their quilt design. They will gather their fabric choices to use in class.
Students will arrange their design on a design wall, take photos, and rearrange their design, taking more photos to share with the class for discussion.
Basic quilt construction rules will be introduced for entry level students. This is a beginner friendly class.
Students will construct their quilt top
Ideas for quilting and facing or binding the quilt will be discussed and demonstrated.
A class kit is available for those who wish to make the Square within a Square Quilt Pattern. Link for kit will be provided when you enroll.
This is a two session class with a week in between for students to begin work on their quilt designs and construction. They are encouraged to send in photo is their process to be discussed in the second class.
Class will be recorded and students are given access to all video clips and recordings 24/7.
“Rachel’s class is so full of tips, techniques, and tool how-to’s, it’s worth every minute of your time. She is an extremely supportive and inspiring instructor, willingly sharing her expertise. During the live sessions, Rachel welcomed and encouraged students to share their own experiences with products and techniques. While she provides patterns and fabrics for those who want them, Rachel also encourages any student to develop their own design and provides feedback if requested on fabric choices. If you want a safe learning environment with fun classmates and a stimulating teacher, this is it. I look forward to more learning with Rachel Derstine!” – Lynne Forrest
